About

The Palouse
The Palouse is a unique, fertile area in Eastern Washington and Central Idaho, although precise boundaries very from person to person. Photographically, it is unlike anything  I've seen, and thus provides numerous opportunities. Fortunately, it's right in my "back yard". Unfortunately, I don't visit often enough. :-)

The view from Steptoe Butte on a mid-June day, facing due South. The amazing thing about sunny afternoons here, as the sun dips, the shadows continually change, creating a whole new look every few minutes.

Leaving the Steptoe Butte area, after a gorgeous sunset, I turned a corner to see a gorgeous moonrise. Some days, the magic works!

Normally, shooting in mid-day doesn't give great light, but sometimes you find a scene that begs for a picture.

The Palouse is filled with scenes like this as the wheat grows to maturity. It's truly a marvel!

There are a multitude of shades of green around the Palouse. This was the greenest field I'd ever seen!

Near Farmington, Washington, I loved the pattern of the tilled land leading up to the grain elevators. I passed by this spot mid-afternoon, but returned nearer to sunset when the light is warmer and lower, emphasizing the textures and lines.

Barn's Last Stand
Barn's Last Stand

I passed this barn many times traveling to and from Spokane to the west side of the state, located about 20  miles east of Moses Lake. I can't count the number of times I would say, "I should stop and take a picture". Finally, in June of 2000, I actually stopped and took a short series of pictures. A few months later as I passed by again, the barn was down. The tower of the windmill remained for some time, but it eventually came down as well.
